Faith Creative Arts Journal

Call for Submissions

This summer, the Creative Arts Ministry at Faith Bible Church is working on publishing a collection of creative works by Faith members. If you like to write and create, please consider submitting any of the following for consideration:

  • Poem
  • Short story
  • Chapter/excerpt from a novel or other longer work
  • Creative nonfiction story
  • Song
  • Short play
  • Art/graphic piece
  • Photo

All ages are welcome to submit pieces, from grade-school kids to retirees!

The theme for this volume is “Truth.” While pieces don’t need to be explicitly “Christian,” successful submissions will in some manner communicate truth—about God, about people, and about the world—that is consistent with the Bible. Happy endings aren’t required, but the overall message should focus on truth, as the psalmists did in their laments.

Please review the guidelines below before submitting your work. We look forward to enjoying your creations!

Submission deadline: July 17

Publication date: August 30

Contact Liv Sandvik or Lynn Yount with questions or concerns, or email lyount@fbchurch.org.

The submission form will be included here shortly!

Guidelines

  1. Adults must be Faith members for their works to be considered for publication. Minors must be regular attenders or children of members.
  2. Please prepare a brief (30-100 words) author biography to include with your submission. If submitting visual art, also include an artist’s statement up to 150 words about the work’s medium and meaning.
  3. Please submit written pieces in .doc or .docx format. Use .jpg or .png files for visual art.
  4. Length limits: 2,000 words for prose, 150 lines for poetry. Slightly longer works may be considered, but preference will be given to those within the limits.
  5. Please do not submit AI-generated works.
  6. No anonymous pieces will be published.
  7. Individuals should submit no more than 3 pieces for consideration.
  8. Pieces may be subject to minor corrections without consulting the author. Substantial edits will only be made with the author’s permission and input before publishing.
  9. All submissions are subject to review and approval by Faith elders before publishing.
  10. If more qualifying works are submitted than there is space to include, preference will be given to pieces that the selection team considers well-executed and widely edifying. Here are some questions to ask:
    • Does it “adorn the doctrine of our Savior” (Titus 2:1-10)?
    • Can most people understand what it means? (1 Corinthians 14:19)
    • Does it communicate truth and build others up? (2 Timothy 2:15-16, Psalm 19:7-10, Ephesians 4:25,29)
    • What or whom does it illuminate, raise up and glorify: The Triune God and the fruits of the Spirit, or self and worldly desires? (Ephesians 5:1-10)
    • If it is akin to a psalm of lament, for example, is faith or trust in God expressed despite sorrow or doubt?
    • Does the author’s/artist’s intent align with Scripture?
    • Does the medium or style used complement or distract from the meaning?

The submission form will be included here shortly!
