Review by Mikayla Rainbow, ninth grade The False Prince is the first book out of five in the Ascendance series. The author, Jennifer A. Nielson, is a Christian, though this is not expressly shown in this book or the rest ...
We all struggle with anxiety, depression, discontentment, anger, or lust. In 12 chapters that include a study guide, Jim Berg addresses our noisy souls. This book will teach you to know God better and learn to trust His sovereignty and His promises.
Berg states, “The godfather of noisemakers is pride. Most noise is created when we try to gain control of our lives, or regain control when it has been taken away... This fight for control is a major source of noise and pressure.”
Berg teaches us that to quiet a noisy soul we must track our thinking and not our feelings. We must evaluate our thoughts against God’s Word. We must repent of wrong thoughts and replace them with thoughts that honor God.
In Matthew 11:28–30, Jesus says: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” In response to these verses, Berg says, “You must come to Christ and purpose to be like Him to quiet the noise in your soul.”
Berg also states, “If God is the biggest thing in your life, you don’t need anything more, nor do you want it. He is more than enough. Conversely, if God is not enough to satisfy you, then nothing will be enough for you.”
I would recommend going through this book, which is an overview of the Quieting a Noisy Soul curriculum, with another person or your growth group. Reading God is More Than Enough will give you a taste of Quieting a Noisy Soul, though I highly recommend completing the entire study.
Berg closes with, “Your stability and usefulness to God is dependent upon your knowledge of and trust in who God is and how he works. You must know what is true about God and order your life accordingly.”
