As believers, Christ is not just our ticket to the prize, Christ is our prize!
Sermon Notes
Paul gives us 4 encouragements to pursue the prize of Christ!
1. Rejoice in the prize of Christ (3:8-11)
Christ is the prize
- Christ is our King, Savior and God!
Philippians 3:8 “…the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord…”
- Christ makes you righteous!
Philippians 3:9 “…and be found in him…having [righteousness]… which comes through faith in Christ”
- Christ makes you like Himself!
Philippians 3:10 “…that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death”
- Christ will transform us at the resurrection
Philippians 3:11, 3:20b-21 “…the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.”
2. Realize there is more to come – more knowing Christ! (3:12-13)
3. Reach for the prize because Christ reaches you (3:12)
4. Respond to the call of God – pursue the prize of Christ! (3:14)
- Pursue with all you are being like Christ, forgetting what lies behind because the goal lies ahead still.
Philippians 3:13
- Pursue the prize of Christ because God has called us to know Christ and be like Christ progressively now and perfectly at the resurrection.
Philippians 3:14
- Pursue Christ continually because maturity is knowing Christ is the prize and that we have not arrived yet, so we must keep pressing on to know Christ more!
Philippians 3:15
Reflection Questions
- How are you pressing on to know Christ and be like Him with others?
- Who are your gospel partners?
- What truths from Philippians do you need to meditate on this week to be pursuing the prize of Christ?
