Sermon Notes

Introduction: What is a Patriot?

Big Idea: Paul calls you to live faithfully as a Gospel Patriot!

  • Philippians 3:20
  • Acts 16:12, 19-21
  • Acts 22:27–29

How are we to live as faithful Gospel Patriots?

A faithful gospel patriot must be willing to “hold the line” [stand firm] with his fellow citizens/soldiers (1:27b)

  • Paul describes “standing firm” by the active pursuit of striving [struggling] side by side for the faith of the gospel (1:27c)
  • Paul describes “standing firm” as being not frightened in any way by those who oppose you (1:28a)

What gives us the courage to stand firm in the mutual struggle for the gospel without being frightened?

  1. You can have courage because you know that your faithfulness and fearlessness prove you are on the right side of this eternal struggle (1:28b)
  2. You can have courage because you know that suffering for the gospel is a certain gift of God’s grace (1:29)
  3. You can have courage because you know that you are simply following in the footsteps of God’s faithful saints (1:30)

Benediction:
Romans 15:5-6 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
