Jesus calls His followers to understand and imitate the mercy of God.

Sermon Notes

Introduction

Main Idea: Jesus calls His followers to understand and imitate the mercy of God—here are two broad ways we are called to do so:

  1. Cultivate a generous spirit toward others (Luke 6:37-38)

Jesus commands two general ways we must cultivate a generous spirit toward others—something negative to avoid, and something positive to pursue.
    1. You must not sinfully judge or condemn

Four things that define sinful judging…
      1. Judging by outward appearance
        John 7:24
      2. Judging by your own standard
        James 4:11-12
      3. Judging the heart (motives and attitudes)
        1 Corinthians 4:5
      4. Lacking helpfulness and humility
        Galatians 6:1-3

    2. You must generously pardon others

  2. Recognize and root out blindness to your own faults (Luke 6:39-42)

Jesus describes three ways spiritual pride makes the man of God blind and ineffective
    1. The spiritually blind cannot lead others anywhere safely (Luke 6:39)
    2. Whoever you are learning and imitating determines who you will become (Luke 6:40)
    3. The hypocrite will be unable to truly help his brother (Luke 6:41-42)
