Introduction

… so that you can avoid being woefully shocked and deceived in the last day…

Main Idea: Jesus charts four contrasting pursuits of the earth-bound soul and the eternally blessed disciple…

1. Reject earthly privilege (“woe to you who are rich”) for the blessedness of spiritual poverty (6:24)
2. Reject earthly satisfaction (“woe to you who are full”) for the blessedness of lasting spiritual hunger (6:25a)
3. Reject earthly pleasure (“woe to you who laugh”) for the blessedness of honest lament (6:25b)
4. Reject earthly acceptance (“woe to you when all speak well of you”) for the blessedness of
   undue scorn (6:26)
