The Gallows Speech of the Son of Man, Part 6: Dying the Death of Radical Love

John 15:9-17

Proposition: two realities about how to die the death of radical love, so that your life will be lived with cosmic significance.

1^st reality (of radical love)—you must know the priority of love (vv. 9-12)

Four aspects that explain why love is a priority:

1^st aspect of love: the foundation of love (v. 9)

2^nd aspect of love: the experience of love (v. 10)

3^rd aspect of love: the motivation of love (v. 11)

4^th aspect of love: the exhortation to love (v. 12)

2^nd reality—you must know the power to love (vv. 13-17)

Three (more) aspects of love that explain how we get the power to love:

Aspect #1—the manifestation of love (v. 13)

Aspect #2—the identification of those who love (vv. 14-16)

• The friends of Christ obey Christ (v. 14)

• The friends of Christ know Trinitarian secrets (v. 15)

• The friends of Christ were chosen by Christ (v. 16)

Aspect #3—the command to love—look at the text (v. 17)
