Why Eschatology (Study of end times) Matters
- Eschatology matters because the very fact that God includes it in His Word (and so
much at that—27% of the Bible deals with prophecy!) means that we should know as
much as possible and that it should be precious to us.
- Eschatology matters because God’s very Word predicts how the end times will unfold. If
the end times do not unfold the way God’s Word predicts, then God’s Word is
meaningless. Therefore, to say that Eschatology doesn’t matter is to say that God’s
Word doesn’t matter
- Eschatology matters because your understanding of Eschatology is inherently linked to
your view of God—and your view of God is inseparably linked to your life!
- Eschatology matters because the end times are ultimately about Christ putting Himself
on display as a treasure and His people being infatuated with Him for all eternity (cf. 1
Corinthians 15: Ephesians 1:10; Philippians 2:9-11).
- Eschatology matters because the end times are perhaps the greatest display of God’s
perfect sovereignty over every detail of life (cf. Isaiah 46:9-10). Therefore, if Eschatology
doesn’t matter, then neither does the sovereignty of God.
- Eschatology matters because it is an incentive for evangelism
- Eschatology matters because throughout Scripture, the end times are used by God as a
motivator for radical holiness and a profound urgency in the lives of His people.
Therefore, there is a great necessity to not only understand Eschatology, but to
understand it with great accuracy so that it may produce the intended holiness and
urgency that it is designed to (cf. 2 Peter 3:8-13).
- Eschatology matters because knowing precisely how the end times will unfold helps
produce in us a balanced life of both sobriety and urgency.
- Eschatology matters because the faithfulness of God is at stake. In other words, God
has made specific promises (i.e., Covenants) with a specific people (i.e., Israel, Church)
and God must fulfill these promises to the very people to whom He originally made them
or else God is unfaithful. And if God is unfaithful then our faith in Christ is worthless.
Proposition: Three Covenants and three key events that you must know so that you will
understand God’s sovereign plan for the future.
